דָּוִד מֶלֶךְ. David is king. דָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ. David is the king. Aramaic accomplishes this differently—by using the 3d person pronouns as a copula: כּוֹרֵשׁ הוּא מֶלֶךְ. Cyrus is king. כּוֹרֵשׁ הוּא מַלְכָּא. Cyrus is the king. The subject of such sentences need not be in the 3d person: אֲנַחְנָא הִמּוֹ עַבְדוֹהִי. We are his servants. (Ezra 5:11) אַנְתְּ הוּא רֵאשָׁה דִּי דַהֲבָא. You are the head of gold. (Daniel 2:38) This same construction also occurs in biblical Hebrew; for example:
